The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) announced today that every home in the country will have a smart electricity meter installed by 2024. The roll-out will begin in 2019, a year later than originally planned.
ESB Networks will be responsible for the installations. CEO Marguerite Sayers said that “These meters will allow customers to access detailed energy information if they wish to use it. It will be a very large-scale and challenging project, including a national roll-out of new meters, a new metering communications system and very significant IT changes.”
Pilot studies suggest that savings for an average home would be in the region of €50 per year once the meters are installed.
